Soya And Nutrition
Medical experts and researchers have established
that diet has strong bearing with the chronic human diseases. Analysis of extensive
epidemiological data on diet and diseases in People's Republic of China
led Campbell to state that a diet rich in protein, particularly animal
proteins, may have greatest potential for enhancing risk of chronic
degeneration diseases such as heart disease and cancer. However, the lower
intakes of other dietary components primarily saturated fat and
cholesterol are known to affect blood cholesterol levels that are
present in Asian diets, when compared to Western diets have
confounded analysis in epidemiological studies. Actually controlled
clinical studies are required to demonstrate that in addition to lowering
of blood cholesterol levels, say proteins may also reduce the risk of some
cancers.
Studies of allergies have shown that true food allergies are about 1 to 2%
in adults and 5% to 8 % in children. Often soya foods can take place of
more allergic foods, such as cow's milk and eggs. However some people may
be allergic to certain type of Soya foods. Though it is difficult to
determine actual incidence of food allergies because different diagnostic
methods yield different results. Children under 6 years of age are most
likely to have food allergies. A genetic predisposition to allergies
greatly increases the risk, Soya based infant formulations have been used
since 1929 to feed infants with cow milk protein allergies. Today Soya formulations are equivalent to cow's milk formulae in digestibility,
nutrition profile. In healthy infants, Soya formulae promotes normal
growth, nutritional status and bone mineralization. Based on American
Academy of Pediatrics Soya based formulae are safest option for infants
with cow's milk allergy. Food scientists are working to identify specific
protein in Soya which have allergic potential 17, 18, 19, 20.
Identification of these proteins eventually could lead to development of a
genetically altered variety of
soyabean which could be safely consumed by every one.
