Soyabean -- What's That... ?

It is an annual summer leguminous plant naïve to Eastern Asia. Soya is oil rich and protein rich bean. Soyabean had been known the world over as unmatched amongst oil seeds for its nutritive qualities, and is acknowledged as the Protein King for its highest protein content besides having an abundance of mineral salts and Vit. A, B, & D.

Origin: The Soyabean plant called “Glycine Ussuriensis” is a native of Eastern Asia viz., China, Korea, Manchuria, Mongolia and Japan.

Uses and importance: Soyabean is very useful in the preparation of bread, biscuits, cakes, pastries, soups, pulse analogues, extruded snacks etc.

It is rich in proteins, fat, carbohydrates, mineral salts and vitamins A, B & D and when sprouted contains vitamin C. It s also rich in mineral salts of calcium, sodium, manganese and phosphorus. Industrially, Soyabean oil extracts are use in the manufacture of vanaspati, margarine, vegetable ghee, etc. and also a s medium of paints, varnishes, linoleum, printing inks etc. Soya oil contains lecithin and Vitamin A and it is usually substituted for olive oil.

After the oil extraction, the resulting residue cake/meal is very rich in protein and mineral salts. And very valuable as fertilizer or as feed for livestock or for preparing flour for general consumption.

Defatted Soya flour is of great importance in diabetic dietary. Since its starchy contents and saccharides are low, it s well suited for diabetic patients.

Soyabean Composition: 38% protein; 15% Soluble carbohydrates (Sucrose, stachyose, raffinose, others; 15% Insoluble carbohydrates (Dietary fibre); 18% Oil (0.5% Lecithin) 14% Moisture, Ash, others.

Is Soyabean a recent discovery...?

No. Soyabean is one of the oldest forms of nutrition in the world. Even 400 years ago the Chinese were using Soya. But, yes, in India Soya is quite a recent discovery.

Where is Soyabean Grown ... ?

Soybeans succeed in nearly all types of soil – but grows in fertile or sandy loam.

In India they are grown mainly in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Hrayana and Punjab. The world’s largest producers are the USA and China.
