For more than 30 years,
clinical research has shown that soya protein lowers cholesterol levels
in individuals with elevated cholesterol.
Researchers
from the University of Illinois conducted a six month study of the
effects of soya protein in postmenopausal women. The study elicited the
fact that soya protein consumption lowered risk of heart disease. The
investigators found that LDL-receptor activity increased markedly in the
soya groups, suggesting soya protein in lowering cholesterol by speeding
up hepatic degradation of serum cholesterol. More studies on Soya
protein and its components show it can help promote bone health as well
as promoting good health during menopause.
It might be surprising to note that every 15 minutes a man dies
of prostate cancer in the United States, and estimates are that over
200,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year.
In contrast to the situation in the United States, death due to prostate
cancer in Japan is relatively rare, only about one-fifth the US rate.
There is speculation that Soya food which are a rich source of the
isoflavone – genistein, play a significant role in this lowering
cancer rate. A study done on rats showed that the consumption of Soya
food could lead to high tissue levels of genistein, which can protect
against prostate cancer.
Soyabean consumption has been posited to reduce the risk of
breast cancer. One hypothesis is that the phyto-estrogens in soybeans
reduce breast cancer risk by acting as anti-estrogens. On October 26th,
the USFDA authorized the use of health claims about the role of soy
protein in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. Specifically,
incorporating soy protein into your daily diet helps fight coronary
heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels
The
Asian diets have been rich in Soya ingredients since thousands of years
thus it is not surprising that the rate of coronary heart disease is far
less in the Asian countries than the other parts of the world. The
special Soya rich diet in Japan further elicits the fact. But the other
nations are also joining the Soya bandwagon and opting for
vegetarianism.
